For Us New On The Block
Thanks Phillip, I didn't realize I posted that much about the "Fake Shift" but I see I did. Many here were already doing this but no one gave it a name that's all. I tried to do the same with "The Low Gear Advantage" because it helps in so many ways to so many driving styles and conditions.
Since you brought the Fake Shift up again, Wayne (excel) trigger a thought to me when he told me how the FEH high voltage battery sucked up the juice (received charge) when it is very low. My test have shown that when the ICE starts to charge a drained battery, it pulls the ICE mpg down hard at first (around 21mpg at 31mph). As the battery fills, the mpg get's better (around 36mpg at 31mph). This is a curve from a low battery start up ICE to the full battery (21-36mpg as the battery fills to the top). At 31mph with no arrow charging the battery, the mpg go above 36mpg.
Phillip posted my old post on the fake shift and you can see I pointed out then the advantages of getting a charge as you fake shift. With what Wayne said to me and using the fake shift, what a better way to take some of the energy needed to fill the low battery from the wheels. This decreases charge time for the battery, takes a big load off the ICE faster (better mpg) and you go EV more often saving even more gas. Try this and see how much the charge needle moves at a low battery up to a full battery.
Here is what I do... As I'm driving at a constant speed (say 35- 40mph) and the ICE is charging, I do a slow fake shift letting off the gas completely (big dip in the charge needle) and apply pedal again to hold speed constant. The RPM will drop from 1,500 or 1,800rpm's depending on your speed to about 1,000rpm's for charging. Increase RPM back to set speed. Do this every few seconds till the battery and you are ready for EV again. I do this with the cruise control on by increasing my speed a little and then let off. Cruise control takes a little from FE but takes a lot away from stress. I've learned to relax and get great FE unlike when it was new and I worked my butt off.
