And if you could imagine where my starter switch if remotely located on my 72 VW Super Beetle. Sometimes I forget, turn the key to start, then remember the starter button is well hidden.

It's a theft deterrent, but a car of this vintage, they are pretty easy to steal

 

Most vehicles will actually wear out the front brakes first, the FEH's included. I frequently check the wear on the brake pads, and my front are thinner than the rear, but not by alot (they started out the same).

I do get some "dragging" sounds from my rear brakes on occasion (typically the right side for some reason). Since I use "L" gear for much of my braking, which results in more regen and less friction braking, my rear brakes actually will get rust on them.

I have found a very simple solution when this occurs (which I probably got from this site!):
1) Get Vehicle up to about 60MPH so so.
2) Shift into "N" (this will prevent regen from being used).
3) Brake fairly strongly (but don't lock up the brakes).

You might need to try this more than once, but it usually solves my issues with rear brake sounds.

 

My pads from time to time squeak in reverse. This is from wear in the forward motion creates a "grain" to the pad. When you reverse it CAN make some squeaking at low speeds. Has nothing to do with the parking brake which is a different set of shoes inside the rear brake rotor.
