Default Noisy battery fan

I have a 2005 AWD and I noticed that the traction battery cooling fan was abnormally noisy sometimes, but would quiet down when I would idle for a short while.
I used Gary's trick to display the battery temperature and it was around 24 degC. Nothing unusual but warmer than I expected considering the outside temp was only about 45F (7C).
I am puzzled why the fan would spin up like this with what I consider relatively cool battery and why it would be so noisy.
Any ideas?
