Here's a copy of the letter sent to dealers on what to do: Attachment 2103
will escape the Escape recall.

The next step is done now. As you may recall, my steering failed in January and I had the column replaced by an independent garage. Today I took the FEH to a Ford dealership, who inspected it and found the installation to be correct, and they updated the software. Now I await approval of a refund of the repair.
There were at least a dozen similar Escapes parked around the dealer's service area. I wonder if they have to wait for parts.

Same here yesterday. Apparently no need to replace the column, just a flash. Took less than 1hr and I was out test driving a C-Max Hybrid when I got the completion phone call. Ended up buying the C-Max. Gonna sell the Escape on Craigslist. LOL

Yeah, 08 fwd hybrid. This is actually my first new car purchase ever. I got the ruby red metallic with charcoal cloth. I'm also curious how many recalls end like that, but I've been looking at the C-Max for a few months now and finally pulled the trigger because of the 60mo @ 0% Ford Financing available, WITH $2000 factory rebate.
Compared to the escape, the Max has way better soft materials and fit/finish. The brakes are much better (no sudden release/lurch slowing to a stop when regen releases and brakes engage), and the ICE is much quieter. I'm going to love the 40mpg though since the CA gas prices are normally 50-70 cents more than the rest of the country.

Thanks for the comparison.
The brakes on my '09 are uneven at the transition between friction and regenerative braking if the brakes are cold or wet. This is almost always just the first time the brakes are used in a day. Other than that, you can't tell when it makes the transition.
In summer conditions, our '09 AWD has been getting 39-40mpg, and on a lower speed portion of a road trip this summer, it got 45mpg on one tankful. The lowest it got was 35mpg on a fillup.

Interesting. My '08 has always been uneven at transition, which is likely why they changed to rear drums in '09 and did something else I can't remember now. The only thing that temporarily helps is to hit the brakes relatively hard and come to a more abrupt stop, which then helps the transition for awhile till it starts getting uneven again. Nice job on your MPGs! I was able to get 37mpg in stop-and-go once but that was right before I got the SSN warning from my MECS pump crapping out. LOL
I got 49mpg not really trying all that hard in the C-Max today, at least according to the drive readout at the end of the trip. Talk about a fun game to play though. The 'empower' screen tells you how much EV juice you can squeeze out before the ICE turns on, so you can push farther on EV.
