Ford Dealer REFUSING to Honor 8 Year/100,000 Mile Warranty on High Voltage Battery

GatorJ,
Congrats on getting Ford to do the right thing. A bittersweet victory (at least it was in my case) knowing that this will just keep happening to others including those who do not have the money to pay for the repair or the time to fight Ford. Just shows to me that after weighing the cost of Ford's going into their system to make the parts show up as warrantied (and Ford paying for the warranty work) vs. losing customers, Ford has chosen the latter. I'm glad it worked out for you.

GatorJ, that's awesome! Thanks for all the helpful information.
Since I'm fighting this same battle, I went to a new dealer today and talked to the tech who says he's the only qualified hybrid tech in my area. Very upfront guys.
He said in his experience the famous P0A81 code is typically related to a water pump (still a cooling issue), and not really a fan issue at all. He's replaced several of them and never had anyone come back with more issues. Of course, the water pump isn't covered.
So, he's 99.9% sure the water pump will fix it. And if it doesn't, they will fight with Ford to get the whole battery replaced. We're going into Arizona summer, so if the fans are truly bad the issue should resurface soon enough. No shortage of heat here.
Anyone familiar with a water pump issue? Thoughts on this?
Thanks,
Tanya

This is a photo of the electronic water pump that you are referring to:

It is a known issue. Around $165.00 from BlueSpringsFord.com

If replacing the water pump does not fix your problem, then I would say that you are owed cooling fans PLUS a refund for a water pump that was needlessly installed. Hope it works out for you.

There's a test outlined in the service manual to determine if there is a fan failure or not. If it is a fan failure only, there is NO way Ford will approve a new battery.
I had a problem with a warning light after driving my car('07 FEH, 88,500) on a 3 hour trip, so I took it in(Robinson Bros., Baton Rouge). The diagnostic said I needed a new cooling pump ($550), My high voltage battery fan replaced ($1000), and a reset of my computer etc. for a total of +1700 dollars.
So I did research on these blogs, and the next day I called and argued my case that my fans were covered under the Unique Hybrid Parts Warranty.
After no capitulation at the dealer, they gave me customer service to call and I have since talked to three different agents. The first two gave me the same spiel(like an internal memo?) and said under that part # it was not covered. So I tried the other part # (5m6z 10B759-a) and the third time she put me on hold for 10 minutes so I thought I may be making progress. Well she finally got back and said no such luck. So I never gave her the part name(i.e. HV batt. fan) only the other number. I think she may have read the notations of my previous calls. Then she would not let me talk to a supervisor.
What I decided to do , since my '07 Escape has been stuck at the service dept., is tell them to only replace the cooling pump.
I want to fight this warranty battle more, but does anyone think it is unsafe to drive with the fans out, or is there a chance the fans still work and I just need a pump?
Any feedback is appreciated since I am working in Baton Rouge but must drive back to San Francisco soon in my FEH! Thanks, Dave.

When my fans failed my ICE ran continuously after the vehicle warmed up and my gas mileage plummeted to around 15 MPG. Since Ford has documented your fans have failed, they are going to claim any other damages are caused by your operation of the vehicle in a defective condition.

Thanks for your post. I did give them the part #which was 10B759, but I think they were aware what I was doing as I didn't tell them it was a battery fan, I think they read the notes from my other calls.
I haven't had a drop in mileage because of the faulty fans but will keep an eye on that. I still want to fight this.
Could y'all tell me the dealerships you went to that eventually said they would cover the fan under warranty?
Much appreciated. Dave.

David: Tell the DEALER to use that part number, 10B759, to find the list of covered internal components.
My dealer for this was Bill Currie Ford, Inc. in Tampa, FL.
When I read yet another was going through this crap, I called Ford Customer Service this morning and asked to speak to the level 2 person assigned my case. She is the person I spoke with Monday, April 16 who told me she was waiting for additional information. I was going to tell her two more people on an enthusiasts' forum were going through the same garbage I went through and to find out what the magic part number was or who to ask for at Ford Customer Service to get this quickly covered without the BS. The person who answered the phone told me she wasn't in, but he saw from her notes she was scheduled to call me Monday, April 23 by 6 PM. I just started laughing...that would have been 4 weeks. And Ford thinks people are willing to put up with that nonsense?????
It's funny how, after I had my vehicle back in my hands and my dealer was left with no vehicle, no money and a piece of paper inviting them to sue me if they thought they were correct (and paying my attorney's fees if they were wrong), this was resolved within about 6 business hours.
