I doubt its any operating system anyone has heard of... and probably proprietary. It would be some real-time system that hopefully didn't require much computer horsepower to run.

Most auto's use VXWORKS. I think it has to be something rather standardized in the auto industry, otherwise scanguage tools couldnt retrieve info correct?

It talks on a high speed serial bus, called a CAN bus, for Controller Area Network.... Serial in the sense it only needs two wires. But it is fast... 100 Mbps I think... fast enough to trigger air bags and ABS.

The system is standard across all manufactures, but the "language" may differ... and there are sub=sets of data and commands that are generic, and some that are propriatary.

CANBus is a communications protocol. The oerating systems may be dependent on the microcontrollere used in the application. In some cases, it is just some of the pieces that would be in a complete operating system.

You betcha, if it were a standard system we would be able to hack it and fix a few issues like no ev cold or after restart.

The system is standard across all manufactures
Not yet but heading that way, however each manufacture uses its own system, far from standardized, not even close to 10/100 base t.

and there are sub=sets of data and commands that are generic, and some that are proprietary.
Basically in all automotive PCMs sold in the USA they have to have 2 PCMs within. One for the OBDII which contains the generic or mandated data. The other is the proprietary system and this is what the auto runs on. This is the manufactures side and they may do as they please with what is available and is usually rather difficult to access unless you have the manufactures scan tool or one that has been licensed.
