It's sort of the opposite, actually. Atkinson cycle engines do have a lower top end but they perform better when revving. It's at low revs where the power loss is most apparent.
How this works in the "real world" becomes clear if ever your FEH runs only on ICE with no battery power. If this happens it really demonstrates the shortcomings of the unassisted Atkinson engine. Press the pedal and, instead of the response you're used to, the ICE comes on instantly and revs to about 2500-3000 RPM. Acceleration under these conditions is best described as "liesurely".

I've been running my FEH on 35% ethanol this tank ( by mixing my own E10 and E85 ), and even at below zero temperatures, and it runs great. MPG on 35% ethanol is the same... or 2% better than the traditional E10 found at most RFG areas.
In below zero, I'm getting about 27.5 MPG, where as E10 was giving me 27.0 MPG. Hard to tell if the 0.5 is from the increase in ethanol, but it's for sure not any worse. Cost? E35 is about $2.50 a gallon.
