Lucid DreamDrive ADAS is Ready to Rival Tesla's Autopilot

Lucid’s new DreamDrive suite is an ultra-intuitive ADAS. According to the automaker, the system will act as an invisible co-pilot.

Lucid Motors is proving to be Tesla’s biggest rival in the EV industry. The manufacturer’s Lucid Air sedan currently holds the title of the world’s longest-range electric vehicle. More recently, the company’s DreamDrive Advanced Driver Assist System (ADAS) made its debut. The automaker claims that its new ADAS platform is one of the most sophisticated systems in this segment.

With the help of 32 onboard sensors, the DreamDrive suite can run an onboard ethernet network and a multifaceted driver monitoring system, which allows it to offer more than 30 high-tech features. Furthermore, DreamDrive’s state-of-the-art hardware includes 5 radar units, 14 visible-light cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and 4 surround-view cameras.

According to Lucid, DreamDrive also offers a clear and user-friendly interface. Air Dream Edition and Air Grand Touring models will get the company’s DreamDrive Pro suite as standard. This interface is a more advanced version of Lucid’s DreamDrive platform and gets LIDAR technology. The automaker also offers DreamDrive Pro as an optional extra for Lucid Air Dream Edition.

The new system gets Lucid’s proprietary Ethernet Ring which is a low latency high-performance network.

The platform will allow Lucid to use DreamDrive’s over-the-air (OTA) update capability to introduce new software and features. Senior Director, ADAS and Autonomous Driving, Lucid Motors- Dr. Eugene Lee- shared his thoughts on the new platform.

“DreamDrive Pro has been designed to grow in capability, thanks to our ability to deliver software over-the-air and key equipment already in place in the vehicle,” said Lee. He further added, “Thanks to highly integrated hardware and software teams, Lucid can develop new functionality for DreamDrive Pro in-house. This can benefit every facet of the DreamDrive Pro experience, from the frequency of updates to the planned rollout of the Highway Pilot system for conditional automated driving on select roadways in the coming years.”

Lucid’s system uses a high-speed data network that allows gateways to communicate with one another at gigabit speeds. The new interface also benefits from what Lucid describes as dual-rail power architecture. As a result of this, the system ensures that the vehicle systems receive uninterrupted power. The deliveries of Lucid Air Dream Edition are scheduled to start later this month.
