Lamborghini's First EV Will Be a Grand Tourer

With the world of electrified SUVs or crossovers, Lamborghini’s first EV will be a “2+2 Grand Tourer”

With competing companies releasing hybridized or fully-electric versions of their best sellers, Lamborghini is feeling the pressure to conform and develop an all-electric model. But instead of adding another SUV or a crossover to their lineup, Lamborghini announced that their first EV will be a “2+2” grand tourer. While they won’t be the first European company to release an EV GT — like the Maserati GranTurismo Folgore coming out next year — they will be the only competitor to the Maserati, making for a new class of EV performance altogether.

Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winklemann didn’t give any specific technical specs for the upcoming EV, but he made it clear that it wasn’t being developed for the race track, but rather to be enjoyed on the twisty back roads of Europe like the old days. And while styling hasn’t been announced, a 2015 Asterion concept may be hinting at the automaker paying homage to older GTs like the Espada. The EV GT would be the first Grand Tourer in the company’s line up, which Winklemann thinks is missing.

“It’s going to be a new body style, because what is missing in the lineup today is a GT 2+2, and I think this would be a good add-on to the two super-sports cars and the SUV,” said Winkelmann.

The 2+2 Grand Tourer won’t be on the market until 2028, which puts it well behind the Maserati GranTurismo EV by four whole years — but it could give Lamborghini the chance to work off of and perfect their GT from Maserti’s mistakes. As of right now, the GranTurismo is rumored to have well over 1,000 horsepower and a driving range of 280 miles, and can go from 0-60 in 2.7 seconds — giving Lamborghini rather large penny loafers to fill.
