Proceeds from the sale will go to help catastrophically-injured vets, Gold Star families and families of first responders killed in the line of duty.

It’s been a big year for OEMs selling off first models for charity. Ford let go of the first Bronco and Mustang Mach 1. Cadillac donated the first CT5-V Blackwing and CT4-V Blackwing. And now GMC has auctioned off the first retail production unit of the 2022 GMC HUMMER EV Edition 1 for $2.5 million, with proceeds going to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

Even better, while auction houses typically take out fees and commissions, Barrett-Jackson waived their commission, so 100% of the final “hammer price” (hammer time?) is going to the charity.

“We are thrilled with the auction results and what the proceeds will mean for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation,” said Duncan Aldred, global vice president of Buick and GMC. “We also recognize the support of Barrett-Jackson for this special occasion, which made it a 100 percent charitable endeavor.”

For those less familiar with Tunnel to Towers Foundation, you can head over to their site to learn more in detail — www.tunnel2towers.org. But here’s the quick version. The foundation was “Established to honor the memory of Sept. 11 first-responder Stephen Siller.” It “builds mortgage-free, accessible smart homes for the most catastrophically-injured veterans and provides mortgage-free homes for Gold Star families and the families of first responders killed in the line of duty.” And to think that these amazing folks have $2.5M more to turn into new homes is amazing.

“One-hundred percent of the hammer price from this auction will resonate across America,” said Frank Siller, chairman and CEO of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. “This donation from the HUMMER EV Edition 1 will help build homes for our catastrophically-injured veterans to give them their independence and a better quality of life.”
