Spied on the road, these pics give a clear vision of the beastly electric Hummer.

When we first heard that GM was reviving the Hummer we were dubious. And when it was announced that the 2022 Hummer was going to be all-electric, we were–frankly–impressed. It is a bold move to revive and electrify the Hummer; a vehicle that was the embodiment of gas-guzzling and excess. Certainly, a well-designed Hummer EV effectively proves the breadth of EV possibilities. It also makes a nice humblebrag for GM, cleverly illustrating their evolution. The spy shots should dispel doubts about the 2022 Hummer EV.

Yes, the Hummer is back, and it large and in charge. The photos capture Hummer EV pickup prototypes on the road, and on the North/South Straightaway at GM’s Proving Grounds. And it looks good.

Of course this just stokes our growing anticipation. Which seems just about right as GM has been playing the long game on the Hummer debut. GMC first debuted the 2022 Hummer EV in October of 2020. It is expected to go on sale later this year. The second variant, the Hummer EV SUV, will get a primetime teaser on April 3 during the NCAA’s Final Four basketball tournament.

Seeing the Hummer EV prototypes in action is intriguing, especially in context and company of other vehicles. By that we mean: ‘what a beast!’

It is imposing, aggressive, and brawny. It isn’t often that an EV dwarfs other rides on the road, but this is a Hummer.

Compared to the full-sized GMC Sierra Heavy Duty, the Hummer is similar in length and size. With its wider stance and beefed-up tires, you can see how this will be an interesting addition to the off-road market.

The Hummer EV prototypes reveal a few changes as it pivots towards refining the production vehicle. But there is definitely no loss of the Hummer identity.

We genuinely are excited to see more. What GM has done is rare in developing a distinctly unique vehicle that is versatile, electric, and look good. The modern styling cues infuse the Hummer with a pickup, SUV, and luxury vehicle. It also seems to be inspired by elements from the likes of the Ford Bronco, Ford Raptor, Jeep, and others.  However, unlike some other luxury electric trucks (cough, cough Elon) these are proper rigs that have the performance and pickup chops.

The 2022 Hummer EV utilizes GM’s Ultium modular platform. A 24-module, double-stacked Ultium battery propulsion system will offer extensive range and power. Its three-motor e4WD drive system will produce 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 lb-ft of torque. It is easy to charge and compatible with 350 kW DC chargers, getting 100 miles of range in 10 minutes of charging or 350+ miles on a full charge.

The first 2022 Hummer EV will be the Edition 1 trim, with an anticipated price tag of $112,595. Next, GM will roll out the Hummer EV3X starting at about $100,000. And the more “reasonably-priced” EV2X and EV2 are slated for 2023 and 2024, in the $80K to $90K range.

Interesting, GM. You definitely have our attention.
