DeLorean Reborn with the Alpha5 EV (and Yes, It Has Gullwing Doors)

DeLorean Alpha5 is the all-electric reboot of the iconic ’80s car. A 100+ kWh battery pack will power this EV and deliver over 300 miles of range.

These days every major automaker is reviving its popular models as all-electric offerings. Now automotive icon DeLorean is not only resurrecting itself but doing so by joining the likes of Chevy Silverado and Ford F-150 Lightning by adopting electric mobility. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the DeLorean Alpha5.

If you’re gonna build an EV, Marty, why not do it with some style?

Best known as the Back to the Future car, the original DMC DeLorean was a bust, lasting for only three model years. A hard fall for a man like Jon DeLorean whose Pontiac GTO started the Muscle Car era. But landing a starring movie role as Marty McFly and Doc Brown’s time machine elevated the car to icon status. (Gullwing doors and a unique stainless steel body helped.) And so a British mechanic named Steve Wynne acquired various trademarks and formed a second DeLorean Motor Company to produce brand new DMC DeLoreans using leftover parts and new components.

And now the new DMC is moving into the electric realm with the Alpha5, which featuresĀ a swooping roof and will be available in a two-tone paint job. The Chief Marketing Officer of DeLorean Motor Company, Troy Beetz, also shared his thoughts on the company’s all-new halo car. “The Alpha5 is a representation of the past 40 years of DeLorean,” said Beetz.

He further adds, “There was this enormous responsibility to make sure we honored the history of the DeLorean brand, but an even greater responsibility in curating its future…I think we did both with the Alpha5.”

Unlike its spiritual predecessor, DeLorean Alpha5 can accommodate up to four passengers in this avatar.

Alpha5 will deliver over 300 miles of range courtesy of a 100+ kWh battery pack, according to the company. The exciting new EV can also hit the 60 MPH mark from a complete standstill in 3.4 seconds. The car’s impressively low drag coefficient of 0.23 is responsible for an impressive balance between performance and efficiency.

Furthermore, DeLorean Alpha5 can achieve a top speed of 150 MPH. The company also claims that these specifications are exclusive to the base performance model. As a result, we reckon DMC might offer more performance-focused versions of the Alpha5 in the future. The brand will only produce 88 examples of the Alpha5. The car will make its first public appearance at Pebble Beach in August, and its production will start in 2024.
