BMW Introduces the First All-Electric 7 Series

The pre-orders for the all-new BMW i7 xDrive60 are now open. Customers can place orders for BMW’s first all-electric 7 Series with a $1500 deposit.

Electric BMWs seem to be making all the headlines these days. Earlier this month, we discussed Electric Classic Cars’ Tesla-swapped BMW E9 “Batmobile.” More recently, the Bavarian automaker launched the seventh generation of its flagship 7 Series nameplate. An all-electric i7 xDrive60 model is also part of the 7 Series lineup for the first time.

In addition to the battery-only model, the company will also offer the new 7 Series in two other IC configurations. As of April 20th, customers can place pre-orders for the first-ever BMW i7 EV. More details are available on BMWUSA.com, and a $1500 deposit is required to place the pre-orders. A pair of highly efficient electric motors propel the fully-electric BMW 7 Series.

The electric-only powertrain of the BMW i7 xDrive60 churns out 536 HP of maximum power and 549 lb-ft of peak torque. The all-new BMW i7 can accelerate to the 60 MPH mark from a complete standstill in just 4.5 seconds. BMW i7 can also achieve a top speed of 149 MPH. As per BMW AG’s preliminary testing, the luxurious EV can deliver 300 miles of range.

BMW’s 5th generation iDrive technology underpins the new BMW i7 xDrive60.

The electric vehicle has a dual motor set up, which uses an electric motor to propel each axle. Furthermore, the transmission, electric motor, and power electronics sit inside a compact housing. The design of the electric motors helps BMW avoid using rare earth materials for manufacturing the rotors.

The new BMW 7 Series’ cabin is a progressive style reinterpretation of the driver-focused cockpit we’ve come to expect from the Bavarian automaker. Customers can carry out most of the functions via touchpads. We find a Mirror Oak High Gloss strip in the BMW i7 xDrive60.

The strip also acts as an elegant stage for the BMW Curved Display. A 12.3-inch information display sits behind the steering wheel, and a 14.9-inch control display screen completes the fully digital screen grouping of the 7 Series. All displays are ergonomically directed toward the driver’s side in its typical driver-focused style.
