Alfa Romeo's Tonale Gets Plug-In Hybrid Option, Goes EV for 2025

Though plug-in hybrid options exist for the current Tonale, expect it to be an EV in just a few years.

Alfa Romeo doesn’t really get too much coverage on this site, which should chance soon as the brand plans to become all-electric by 2027. One of the first cars to go that route will be this car, the Tonale.

Our friends over at Dodge Forum were able to get a close look at the green machine you see here, but with it, some information from Larry Dominique. His title is Head of Alfa Romeo Brand North America, so his information is worth listening too.

According to Dominique, he says Alfa Romeo is, “all about performance. But what we’re really trying to do as we change our DNA is (re)inventing Italian sportiness for the 21st Century.” Part of that reinvention comes in the way of electrification.

This makes the Tonale quite important to Alfa Romeo. Before the Stelvio, Alfa Romeo had but one car in its lineup, the Giulia sedan. It’s a great car, but sedans are making way for crossovers at a huge rate. And now with the Tonale, the brand has its first electrified car.

Power in the Tonale right now comes from a 1.3 or 2.0 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder engine mated to a hybrid system. It’s a very mild hybrid, with just 30 miles of electric range. But the big news will be that this car will be offered as an EV from 2025 onward.

Plus, from 2027 it will be part of a 5-car lineup of EVs available from the Italian brand. We know of Giulia and Stelvio replacement in the lineup so far, but the other two are yet to be revealed. There is a chance, and we hope, that there would be a small sportscar in the lineup. Packaging of EV batteries and drivetrains makes that a little bit difficult at the moment, which is why there are so many crossovers. But if Alfa wants to really put their stake in the ground, a new 4C powered by electric would really put the rest of the industry on notice.
