10 Discontinued Vehicles We NEED to See Revived as EVs!
9. Jaguar XJ220
In the early-1990s, Jaguar teamed with Tom Walkinshaw Racing to develop a modern V12 take on classic Le Mans racers. The result was the Jaguar XJ220, a wild 1990s supercar. Ultimately, the automaker ended up using a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 that had power in excess, producing over 540 hp. Delivering a sobering straight-line performance, the Jaguar XJ220 boasted a 0-60 sprint of 3.6-seconds, with top speeds over 212 mph. Coupled with its sleek and elevated design, it was stunning. And, it was record-breaking; holding the title of fastest production car for 1992 and 1993, as well as remaining one of Jaguar’s most powerful.
Unfortunately it failed to find a place in the market at the time; and Jaguar produced only about 280. Subsequently, the 1992 to 1994 XJ220 became a red-hot white whale among enthusiasts and collectors.
This is a perfect car for Jaguar to bring back. Jaguar has committed to be electric by 2025, and their existing line-up needs a crack of that XJ220 thunder. Alongside Land Rover, the company has produced EVs and hybrids that have excellent specs … but it is missing something. Something that goes beyond the (admittedly awesome) F-Type; something rakish and restless, driven by their racing heritage.
They have the means to build it, and it is exactly the car we want from Jaguar. Remember, this is automaker that was behind the E-Type. Making beautiful and groundbreaking cars is embedded in their DNA.
