Honda's website says that the suggested starting price for a HCH $19,650...but it prolly depends on your dealer.

I paid about $18.5 for my 04 last January. Dealer added free tires and oil changes for life. (But they wouldn't toss in the 40" TV otherwise advertised)

I'm thinking a good deal on a new '04 might be had around the end of the year from some dealerships at the right time.
That's if gas prices remain stable?

These are the cars that are being considered

Accord
HCH (just me considering it lol)
Scion tC

I like the tC a lot... so we might actually get that. Its cheap and possibly fun

Hi Flare:

___Might I seriously suggest that you look into the Accord 4 w/ Auto? Its TCO is the lowest of all mid-size automobiles I have read up on and it is a legendary automobile for any number of reasons. Mainly, you can achieve > 40 mpg out on the highway if you are a highway driver and it’s a 9 second automobile with that powerfully smooth I4 w/ Auto. Lastly, you can pick up a new or used Accord in PZEV format if you are willing to travel to the West or East coasts to pick one up. If you find one to your liking, NAVI gives you a game gauge albeit you have to pay some big bucks for the NAVI option

___The Civic LX/EX is also a very good buy in terms of TCO but their options are rather limited even up into the EX trim. I am speaking of lack of ABS (except the EX), TRAC, VSC, and Side Curtains …

___Good Luck

Have you thought about the Scion xA?
It's the most fuel efficient scion (31/38 for both MT & AT)
I just got an xA a few days ago and it rocks!
The tC is pretty cool, and is alot faster than the xA (camry motor vs. echo motor) but not nearly as fuel efficient (22/29 for MT)
