I believe I heard on the radio today that Toyota has announced that the next gen Prius would be delayed by 2 years (2011) because of continuing problems with the Li battery.

The latest info ( from press reports ) is that the next Prius was delayed from late 2008 as expected to early 2009 because they had expected to put the Li-Ion batteries in it but that technology is not ready yet.

Thus they've had to to a slight redesign to put back the NiMH batteries in the Next Gen, thus the delay.

Yes it appears that the first use of Li-Ion's may be in the 2011 Prius as a MCE....if the technological problems are resolved.

I just seen this

See 2008 Toyota Prius Photos

3: 2008 Toyota Prius
MPG: 80 city -- projected

Time flies when you're being a responsible steward of Mother Earth. It's hard to believe that the Prius was introduced in Japan a decade ago. With the success of over a million on the road around the world today, changes have been minor and meaningful. It still has a polarizing style, but it's now a familiar and accepted sight, even in rural areas. Besides, Prius owners tend to embrace their cars' esthetics, so excess concession to mainstream looks would probably cause an upheaval. It's just as well. The Prius is not everything to everyone, but for a green car with outstanding mileage, it's still tough to beat.

And it certainly isn't 80 MPG, unless you're measuring it going down a long hill. It's the same car as the 2007 and 2006 with very minor "tweeks".

I don't know if or when people will stop speculating and just wait until Toyota TELLS us what will happen. They are the ONLY ones who know!

But at least this gives the car magazines something to use to sell their product.
