I suspect that the method used on the Prius I4, and the FEH/MMH, to implement the atkinson cycle, simply could not be adapted to an engine with 6 cylinders. With 4 cylinders, as charge is being forced back out of one cylinder the opposite cylinder is on an intake cycle.
Not so with a V6.
