Inverter shoots craps at 105,000 miles
My 2006 HiHy's inverter died at ~135k miles & the VIN is 60011076; I had it towed the dealer and was shocked to learn the replacement is quoted at $8500. After discussion with the service manager, they have reduced that charge by $2000+. I deduce that these original inverters are causing major concerns for Toyota with us HiHy owners.

Just a quick update on the used HyHi we were looking at about a month ago; the (used) car lot we were dealing with went over to the local Toyota dealer here and asked, point blank, about this issue; nobody knew anything about it, to the point where the dealer thought the he was half crazy. Salesman back at the used lot's office emailed the notice about the class action suit, to his boss's phone!!! Toy. dealer pretty much had not heard anything of the sort. So much for good corporate to dealer communications.
Anyway, we've dropped out of the running; too risky for our blood. Good luck to anyone out there who has to go thru this.

What has been happening on this subject? I found the forum because I was looking at buying a 2006 Highlander Hybrid, but started researching and found all the buzz about trouble with the inverter. We have called the dealer, and the TSB relevant to the issue has NOT been performed. Right now we're gonna back away from it, rather than take a risk of catastrophic failure at a bad time, without warning.
Thanks

Has anyone initiated a class action lawsuit to address the 2006 Highlander Hybrid inverter? I am awaiting a reply from Toyota America but I would be interested in pursuing this very interesting Toyota problem. I almost fell off my chair when I was told that the part was going to be $9600 to replace when I was only 8K miles over the 100K warranty. please feel free to e-mail me at drjaykorsen@aol.com to inform me about current litigation or any acceptable conclusion to litigation over this issue.
The Class action has been filed in California but all states are eligible to join the class action if you have had the 2006 inverter failure. Contact the lawyers that filed the suit to weigh out your options.

Make sure that you call the FTC and the NHTSA. Without a report from each of us that have had this frightening event occur with our car, it is only a matter of time before there is a fatality. Let's not let it go that far.

Toyota conducting voluntary safety recall of some 2006 and 2007MY Highlander Hybrid and RX 400h vehicles
29 June 2011
Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. (TMS) will conduct a voluntary safety recall involving approximately 45,500 Highlander Hybrid and 36,700 Lexus RX 400h vehicles sold in the US. No other Toyota or Lexus vehicles are involved.
The Intelligent Power Module (IPM) located inside the Hybrid System Inverter contains a control board with transistors. Certain transistors on the control boards in some of the subject vehicles were inadequately soldered and could be damaged from heat caused by a large current flow during high-load driving.

The inverter recall is great news, my 2006 has 75,000 miles and I have resigned to sell it before the warantee expired at 100,000 due to the likelyhood of a inverter failure.
Hopefully there will be some reimbursement for those that have already paid out of pocket for a $9K inverter repair.
