Consumer's Reports weighs in on extended warranties

New-Car Extended Warranty Caution

Tuesday, Mar 04, 2008 - 04:12 PM

BY Consumer Reports

These days more people who are buying a new car are buying an extended warranty. But is it worth the thousand dollars or so?

Consumer Reports surveyed 8,000 of its readers about extended warranties purchased on new 2001 and 2002 vehicles. About two-thirds of them said the extended warranty did not pay off.

The extended warranties cost on average $1,000, but only provided an average benefit of $700. That’s a net loss of $300. Forty-two percent of the people in the survey didn’t use the extended warranty at all, mainly because they didn’t need repairs or because the manufacturers’ standard warranty covered the repair...

But, the TCH is not your average car... with all the specialty systems and components, I am still glad I bought an extended warranty. And, sadly, Toyota quality is not what it used to be.

The only thing that is preventing me from buying the extended warranty is the fact that it doesn't cover the hybrid system, and I would like to see a comprehensive list of things that it doesn't cover (would it cover an engine part, a fuel pump, etc).

Isn't the Hybrid System covered for 8 years by Toyota by default?
Also it's easy to figure what is covered with the Platinum Policy. If it isn't specificially on the exclude list it's covered.

Is the exclude list published somewhere?

It is and I wouldn't go with anything but a GENUINE TOYOTA Platinum policy. I wanted to post the link but right now it seems broken.
Go here:
http://www.toyotaownersonline.com/pa...greements.html
And I think the link (currently broken) you are looking for is here:
http://www.toyotafinancial.com/ebroc...l_line_VSA.pdf
Here is one and YES the fuel pump is covered:
http://www.toyotafinancial.com/consu...risonChartPage
There are probably other links that enumerate the Genuine Toyota Platinum exclusion list so maybe someone will jump in and post it.

I believe I saw yesterday looking through my information the warranty on the Hybrid systems is 96 months or 100,000 miles.

Sorry I just corrected that it's 96 months.

Just go to your dealer, or any dealer, and ask for a copy of the extended waranty brochure. All the info is there....including what is and isn't covered.
