What's that "whurrrring" sound?

What's that "whurrrring" sound?
What causes the "whurring" sound (intermittent, not constant -- like "whur whur whur"...) from your wheels (front for me) while coasting?
It might be there while accelerating but I can't hear it. Sounds like the bearings.

Re: What's that "whurrrring" sound?
From what i know the "Whurring" sound is the regenerative system at work. The generator is always using wheel speed to charge the hybrid batteries. In addition, the regenerative braking system uses the kinetic energy of tthe vehicle in motion to drive the generator/motor bushings to charge the battery when you apply the brakes. There is more in this forum on this subject i'm sure.

Thanks for the response but I know what that sounds is. This is different -- lower pitch. This is the same sound I have herd from my "older" vehicles for years. Just always wondered what it was.

I dont know what the sound could be, but I was listening for it on my way to work today at both high and low speeds and I didn't hear anything like that. Temp was about 45° outside.

Yes, well, the manual I take with a grain of salt (I can say this after reading it and being a software manual writer). This is not a TCH specific sound -- still could be normal. Just curious.

You can hear it when there is no acceleration (foot off the gas). Maybe it is more like a "woe woe woe..." Some kind of bearing/tire noise....

seriously though, could it be something stuck in your tire? I have heard noises like that already with a big rock stuck in my tire...

Re: What's that "whurrrring" sound?
It's probably some interaction between the tires and the road surface that you are on.
Try and listen on a different road surface. If the sound changes it is probably some interaction.
Roads get grooves and all kinds of irregularities ground into them.

Hey Marc and Mike....
Haha, I have to turn the radio off to hear it (rarely does that happen!)....I don't think it is road surface as I can hear is in various places and as I said, it is nothing specific to this car and I have lives in three parts of New York state over the past few years....
Oh well. I might never know what it is. I just know it usually isn't there when a car is new and even they it isn't always there (or at least heard -- it does take a good ear). Which is one of my problems: I have always been able to detect changes in my vehicles. My mother always gets upset because when I come home I usually tell her something is wrong with one of her cars, she takes it the shop and yup, there is some problem. I only need to drive it for a few minutes. Weird.
