While you may believe that the higher octane would increase pollutants - it's not really the case. The higher octane fuels do burn slower and longer but not to the degree that the fuel is exhausted in a less than totally consumed state.
One last thing, this is directed to Big-Foot's comment on the markiting of the Atkinson Cycle VVT engine. You are guessing that the 87 octane rating on this engine is being influenced by marketing then what it should be (from the engineering data)? If that's the case then the engine (Atkinson Cycle VVT) in your opinion should be rated with a higher octane right? Then we are back to the point that the recommended fuel from the engineering department is what you should use. Period. Anything else is a waste, right?
