Default What is the B shift gear?

Hi ,

I am curious to know what that B is after D for drive?

I once shifted to B from D for drive in highway and the I felt the car heavy .

Mine is camry hybrid!

You can put the car in B to use engine braking when going downhill, so you don't have to use the brake pedal as much. There's a downhill grade on my way home from my parents where I'd shift into 2nd with my last car. That caused the transmission to stay in 2nd gear, and use engine braking so I wouldn't have to ride the brake pedal down that hill. Same concept here with the CVT transmission, from what I read in the owner's manual.

A cynical poster would reply RTFM.

I will suggest that you do a search for "engine braking" since there has been much discussion in the past on this topic, and the pros/cons of using engine braking.

I posted a big write up of B mode on my blog a few months ago. Check it out here.

Jimmy, I'm glad you found the information helpful. By the way, the previous poster wasn't calling you a retard. He was saying the purpose of the B gear is for "grade retard" or "to slow you on a grade"

Hey Jimmy no problem, I guess i should have made it more clear. I am dating myself here but some of the very old General Motors cars in the 60's had what they called a Turbo Glide and this transmission had a GR on the indicator which stood for grade retard. The Power glide did not have this feature. SK
