My FE on the tank is now only 28.5 . Oh well... still learning, and only have 30-something miles so far.

So, one thing I noticed several times is people staring at my car. No kidding, at a traffic light I happened to look at the car in the left turn lane and I am almost 100% certain that the front seat passenger in that car was literally staring right at my Hybrid badge. This happened more than once today. I think it is probably the color that gets their attention, and then they see the Hybrid badges...

Funny!
I'm in NY , but not manhattan, and I've got tons of stop signs, traffic lights. Not many straightaways. I'm on my first tank and have been averaging 28.5 mpg ... It's pretty comparable to your numbers.
If you sat thru my commute you'd understand why though. I don't wanna discourage ppl reading this forum from not buying the TCH

Agreed. People that see hybrids with less than stellar mileage shouldn't look at it on an absolute basis. They should ask what kind of mileage they would get in a non-hybrid car. Probably pretty bad.

I also just got rid of my gas guzzling premium requiring TL too!

Ah, maybe I need to get one of those tire pressure checkers that looks surprisingly like my husband. I like that!

Oh, I have been blaming my fuel economy purely on my own abilities to drive the vehicle properly, not on the TCH herself.

Lilarienne,
I'm sure your mpg will get better. I'm on my third tank of gas and am now averaging 33-34 mpg which is up from 31.8. And my commute hasn't changed any....just my driving technique and the car breaking in.

My first tank was something like 34, second tank was 37, third was 38+. Your mileage will get better as the two of you get to know each other.

Some toyota rep told me the same thing: basically that you car adapts to the way you drive.
My wife and I take turns driving our TCH, so I wonder if that will "confuse" the car's learning process.

I believe it is the other way around -- as you spend more time driving, you learn how to get better milage. You see what causes the engine to turn off, what uses up extra gas, etc.

If there is any learning feature to the TCH, it isn't advertised (as far as I have seen).
