Oil Additives?

Oil Additives?
Considering that the ICE shuts off with the Autostop feature, has anyone added or considered adding an oil additive like "Prolong" that is supposed to reduce the effects of friction at every stop light?

Re: Oil Additives?
Where do you get your information?
Alot of oil additives work...
Check out: http://blog.sfrcorp.com/2006/09/13/d...s-really-work/
This article explains the need for oil additives and exposes the good from the bad. The actual manufactures from the MLM marketing companies that don't even know what they are selling.
and this detailed article on why fuel additives work and there is a dire need for them since gasoline quality is at an all time low. Even big automakers are teaming up against them demanding more additives. (toptiergas.com) Until they do we have to use after market fuel additives.
I understand where you are comming from there are multiple marketing companies with no testing that CLAIM to make great products that reduce wear and increase mileage but you have to look at the facts and weed out the additives that work instead of stereotyping them all.
End rant...

Re: Oil Additives?
I won't say they are all snake oil but for my money regular oil and oil/airfilter changes along with don't let em idle for extended periods has taken my engines to high miles. And no I don't use "High Mileage/Long Life" oils when they get there.

Re: Oil Additives?
Does anyone know where I can find 100% fully synthetic oil Mobil 1 0W-20 for less than $5/qt? The cheapest I have found it is $6.49/qt before tax at NAPA... which I believe $6.49/qt should the cheapest since price of oil has gone up.

Re: Oil Additives?
October 1998 issue of Consumer Report magazine about
an oil additive called "Prolong". Their nationwide television
ads claim that this oil treatment bonds a 1-molecule-thick
low-friction coating to metal surfaces in the engine resulting
in longer life, better mileage, more savings. It supposedly
protects the engine even when the oil is drained. The ads show
Al Unser driving a Dodge Viper on a racetrack in the Mojave Desert
without oil or drain plug, and a testimonial from a woman who
supposedly drove from Santa Barbara to L.A., almost 5 hours,
with no engine oil.
Consumer Report took two factory rebuilt GM 4.3 litre V6 motors,
had them installed into Chevy Caprices, broke them in with regular oil,
changed the oil and filter, added Prolong to one engine, drove another
hundred miles or so to let the stuff take effect, then drained
the oil out. Both engines failed simultaneously after 5 miles
and about 13 minutes.

Re: Oil Additives?
Call your local toyota parts department and ask how much a quart of toyota synthetic oil cost. The toyota parts man here in my town said he was pretty sure its made by the mobile one people. I think he quoted me $5 or was it $5.45 for a quart.

Re: Oil Additives?
I know most additives do work. I trust Lucas to the fullest. I have always seen improvement using there additives. Although I have never tried them on a new car.
My new TCH should come in this week. One my first oil change I plan on using the Toyota synthetic 0w-20 oil.
