That's exactly what happened to me.
I just tested this. I opened the trunk, put the fob in, and shut it. The car beeped at me and I was able to open the trunk.
I did not have the 2nd fob with me, all the doors were locked, and the windows were rolled up. I separated the mechanical key from the fob so that I would have an alternate method of unlocking the car but did not have to use it.

1) With the doors already locked, it beeps and refuses to lock the trunk if you leave the fob inside. I presume this is to avoid grief when that's your one and only fob.
2) If the doors are not already locked, it simply refuses to open again with the handle. I've posted the full explanation of that instance above. This behaviour is desirable because it means that you can still leave a purse with a fob inside the trunk, as long as you still have a second fob with you.
