Seems explosion came from under the hood up front, fuel tank and batteries are in the back so it sounds little weird or they're not telling whole story?
On released picture the hood is up, but the car seems to have little damage(for example front windshield seems to be intact). could this be just gasoline fire, something like leaking fuel line under pressure spraying some gas on the driver causing severe burn injuries? I have this feeling this may have nothing to do with the car being a hybrid, but hopefully will find out more soon.

Police now say the explosion/fire in Lexus was caused by a bomb. See cnn.com web site.

I thought of the bomb the first moment I saw it, but one of the articles said originally that it wasn't a bomb and it looked like some type of malfunction, , OK, don't we have hybrids blowing up everyday on our roads. Now, lets see why somebody would actually want to blow him up. Let's hope he get's well soon.
