Look at question number 15 in the new owners FAQ (2.2) in the sticky section of this forum. That will tell you if the hybrid system is working correctly. To check the condition of the traction battery, you will need to use a good scanner capable of reading over state of charge and individual module voltages within the battery. Keep in mind the battery will lose capacity over it's lifetime but will still be able to properly interact with the ICE to work as intended.

 

Is it 07 model with navigation unit? If yes, you can log into diagnostic screen and check on many modules and parts.
Is battery still under warranty? 8 yrs or 100 000 miles from date of sale.
Was car licensed and still is sold in CARB state? Battery then has 150 000 / 10 yr warranty.
