Hidden screen unlocks NAV/phone functions

Hidden screen unlocks NAV/phone functions
I picked up this tip from another site. If your Camry has a NAV system, you can OVERRIDE the programming of your system, thereby allowing you access to certain NOT-normally-available functions while driving.
At least two things are possible by using the OVERRIDE feature: you can manually enter addresses while driving, and you can access normally locked-out features (phone book and manual dialing, for example) of your Bluetooth phone.
Here's a summary. It takes seconds to do, and is simpler than the explanation would lead you to believe.
On the panel to the left of the NAV screen, press MENU and then on the touchscreen, press VOLUME. Then, in the upper left corner of the touchscreen, press the speaker icon once. Then, in the lower left corner of the touchscreen, where NO icon exists (blank), press once. Then repeat the last two steps, pressing the speaker icon and the blank lower left corner again. To summarize, the sequence is:
MENU > VOLUME > VOLUME ICON > BLANK >VOLUME ICON > BLANK
This will bring up a HIDDEN touchscreen. To use the locked-out features of NAV and Bluetooth, touch and hold the OVERRIDE button for five seconds. It will turn blue to indicate you have highlighted it. That's it! However, the OVERRIDE will be discontinued when you power off your car, and you will need to repeat this procedure each time.
NOTE: YOU CAN ACTIVATE OVERRIDE AT ANY TIME WHILE YOU ARE DRIVING. THIS DOES NOT HAVE TO BE ACTIVATED WHILE STOPPED. THEREFORE, YOU CAN LEAVE IT ALONE UNTIL NEEDED.
Obviously, Toyota has locked out some features for safety reasons, but on long trips it may be useful to search for a restaurant while you're driving, or dial a phone number from your saved phonebook. I haven't yet been able to check if CALLER ID is available when OVERRIDE is used, but that would be excellent, too!

Re: Hidden screen unlocks NAV/phone functions
Wow,
Thanks Steve, it worked yesterday, the family is going to be very excited. No more stopping in the middle of the freeway!
The web is severly lacking information to tweak these systems. For example, isn't there a way to hack and remove the splash screen? IT would be incredibly useful to obviouslymake this overide the permanent state of affairs, any ideas ways to discover that?
Cheers,
Hal

Re: Hidden screen unlocks NAV/phone functions
I would PAY someone who figured out how to hack the I agree splash screen and permanently enable Override. Annoying annoying annoying. The inability to enter certain info on the NAV screen while driving is inconsistently implemented, making it that much more annoying. My wife's Honda Odyssey NAV has no such driving lockout.

For a possible source, go to coastaletech.com and follow the links to http://www.coastaletech.com/04prius.htm They have what you are looking for plus mods for EV only mode, full-time power to the front 12V outlet, backup camera, and more. Yes, these are for the Prius, but I called and they are working to see if these will work on the TCH. They may be encouraged to work on this faster if we can guarantee them several orders.

I LOVE this override. Totally cool. I have gone through the other options yet though. Any danger in poking around in them? I don't want my new TCH to blow up, I'd have a hell of a time finding a new one. LOL.

delao13, there already is a hack to enable the override and disable the spash screen all the time for the Prius. I would imagine its only a matter of time before the company would have a TCH version available. I would like to get one and put it in when I go to install my sat tuner.

Re: Hidden screen unlocks NAV/phone functions
Hi Steve and all,
I just got my TCH last Saturday, and I'm still learning lots about it. Thanks to all who post this great information.
I'm not able to override the the Nav while driving. When I do the menu/volume/icon/blank/icon/blank, nothing happens. I can punch this quickly or slowly, but no difference. What am I doing wrong? I work in high tech, but I'm not finding success.
I have version 06.1 of the Nav DVD. Could someone confirm that the override works with this DVD version? I think I found the DVD version from the Menu screen.
I'd really like to try the override, so anything that helps is really appreciated!
Cheers,
Ray
