Getting heat in the car

Living in the northeast we are fast approaching the season when we need heat in the car.
I have found it difficult to get a proper heating setting using the AUTO feature.
Sometimes I have to set the thermostat temp to 80 to get heat at other times if it's 55 outside and I have the setting at thermostat at 75 I get cold air.
Has anyone had any experience with trying to regulate the heat in the car.
I must be missing something.
If I can't figure this out I'll have to move to Florida
where I'll never need heat.

Yea, bit of a pain isn't it. I gave up using AUTO for A/C, but I've tried using heat on Auto now with some limited results. Fan speed and mode seems to vary based on how far away the current cabin air temp is away from the set temp. Sometimes the fan speed will be too high and make the supplied air temp feel a bit cooler than it really is. Also, bright sunshine can make the cabin feel warmer than it really is. Tough to find a good setting during the day.
So far though I find it works pretty good at night (and around here, except on Sat and Sun I'm pretty much in the dark from November until Feb due to day length) it's failrly easy to find a decent temp setting although fortunately it hasn't been BBBRRRRR freezing yet to test the full range of heat.

With the A/C I find I would first set the temp in the low 70s. After a couple of minutes of cold air blowing on me I would get too cold and set it up to 76 - 78. After the cabin cooled down a bit the settings would decrease, I'd start getting warm and eventually it would wind up around 74 or 75 for the rest of the trip.
