Here's a copy of form 8910 from TY 2005. Don't worry about the year (2005) listed at the top - the subheader indicates that this is valid for all vehicles put into service AFTER 2005.

Make sure you have Adobe Reader installed.

In order to qualify for the credit the vehicle:

1) Has to be purchased and placed into service during the prescribed time frame. Your bill of sale and registration prove this.

2) Has to be certified eligible for the credit. Your VIN proves that.

This proof is what to save in your records in case of Audit. The 8910 is accepted on the honor system.

Just to clarify, #2 is (as you say) just used to determine that the vehicle purchased is eligible for the credit -- but does *NOT* determine that #1 is the case.

I just don't want someone going to that link and saying "Gee, this car is eligible for the $2,600 tax credit" if delivery was after Sept. 30. In other words, lots of people with a VIN shown in that link will get the full credit, lots will get a partial credit, and lots will get no credit. :)

If you don't ever go off the deep end you'll wade around up to your knees all your life and never know the thrill and fun of just jumping in.

When we settleing with the finance manager, he corrected the typed paper work to state hybrid with the delivery date. If audited, that should be enough. Unless they change the tax form it looks like as with most other deductions they are trusting you to provide the correct informaton.
