I just double checked, my LG VX8700 displays and updates the signal strength in real-time. I have the NAV.

Thanks to you and anyone else who takes the time to check and report back! I really do think it's the phone itself, because my Motorola V551 updated just fine. (I do not have NAV.)

You're welcome Brian, and I agree with your conclusion.

Well, it seems the answer, from Sony Ericsson, is that their phones don't update past the initial pairing:

Thank you for contacting Sony Ericsson Online Support.

Sony Ericsson’s phones don’t have that option in the phone. It will not be possible to get a signal update besides when first connected.

This really is a poor design considering my old Motorola provided updates. I'm otherwise thrilled with the phone, though.

Anyway, thanks to all who participated here!

Just an information post - I just got the Samsung Instinct a few weeks ago. During a phone call on the way home today, I noticed the signal strength indicator updated in real time.
