I've had my TCH since Sep'06 and have startled my neighbors several times by passing them while they were walking. Extra caution not legislation is the answer to this 'problem'. Kids can and do play in the street and adults must take on the duty to watch for them.

Ultimately... it doesn't matter whether the car was quiet or not. It may have helped the boy get out of the way... but the DRIVER hit him. Not the quiet car. Drivers should not be relying on the NOISE their car makes to warn people to get out of the way.... if thats the case we should all have our horns hardwired on.

I was driving up a divided boulevard the other day near my house. There was a cute woman walking her dog down the middle of my side. She never heard me coming. I literally got within 10 feet of her. I had to give a short beep of my horn in order to get her attention. I was surprised that the dog never looked back either. After she got off to the side I drove by her and said " you never heard me coming?" and she said "No I didn't."

In my town, many times dog walkers don't hear when I drive up in my non-hybrid. The engines aren't terribly loud, normal cars driving at slow speeds don't make a ton of noise. Cars there days are pretty quiet.
As a matter of fact, most of the time, walkers, joggers and cyclists (both cute and non-cute) are oblivious to local traffic.
Just MHO

First I know I didn't have to add she was cute...actually that's not the real word I would use for her.

2nd it is a divided boulevard with a grassy area separating the traffic in a small town with a 25mph speed limit. I have actually walked my dog exactly the same way down that street. I wouldn't call her dumb because of that.

Probably the number one comment people make when I drive up or away in E-mode is "Man you can't hear that thing!"

That would depend on the situation. Bicycles are considered vehicles and have to meet the same rules of the road as cars. The driver of the car could have been an innocent participant in the collision. If the kid rode out in front of the car, it would be just like if you pulled out of your driveway in front of someone. The driver of the car in the street isn't at fault, you are.

Good point. Most people forget that bicycles are supposed to follow the rules of the road.
