Try getting gas at a station that is at the top of a hill. You'll get 99.9 MPG!

What was the hybrid battery SOC at the beginning of the 5 mile "run" vs at the end...??

I suspect the computer calculates instantaneous MPG based ONLY on actual fossil fuel usage and does not account for how much you took out of the hybrid battery (and didn't yet put back) in the short term MPG calculations.

It does exactly that.

BUT -

I have done 62 MPG over a 22 Mile trip.
55 over a 40 mile trip.
72 MPG over a 10 mile trip.

The car is easily capable of that kind of mileage over that kind of trip!

Capable, yes. Easily, not for most.

If only my commute to and from work had no stoplights, stop signs, and I always had the right of way....

My best was 11 miles after a fill up where the main street headed slightly downhill. I hit 99.99 mpg in one mile while on battery. I easy footed it and hit all four green lights though town which was 4.5 miles. The ice ran some on the highway and read 60 mpg.. I drove the 8 miles of highway, then the MFD readout read 67.5 mpg at the turnoff to home. That was on one warm still summer night with no AC.

No doubt this is a interesting challenge, but only if your not bothering the other traffic.

Back quite a number of years ago I was travelling over a mountain pass in our then '84 T-bird that had the OBC option. On the down side of the pass I noted that the MPG indication was reaching >50MPG. Interested in just how it might be I slipped the transmission into neutral and watched as the indication climbed to 99.99MPG.

>100MPG in an '84 T-bird....WOW...!!

Just at the bottom of the pass I whizzed by a radar trap and was written up, 78MPH, about 5 miles down the road.

The only valid mileage is on a round trip. I do great going from WNC mountains down to Greenville, SC but not the other way.

I think the only valid mileage is one computed after a full year's worth of data. There are so many variables including weather, traffic, gas (it changes from summer to winter in many areas of the country), length of trips, etc.
Anything short of a year gives an unrealistic average.
Anyone up north knows that a long highway drive in May gives one reading and stop and go trip in frigid February gives a far different reading.
