Default 61 mpg_848 mile record tank

I did this tank by driving at 40 mph with engine and 30 mph when in EV. This also included some coasting in neutral where I would not need the brakes. I still did the 20 to 25 mph in EV on the 2 mile country road to and from our house. I use the cruise all the time even as slow as 25 mph. If you try any coasting make sure your back in Drive before using your brakes, so it will use the regen which it's designed for.

This tank made it to 848.2 miles at 61 mpg (mid) and took 14.625 gallons to fill using the low setting gas nozzle auto-shut off. I then replaced the cap. Calculated I came up with 14.559 gallons which would be 57.996 mpg. This would be 3 mpg lower than the 61 mpg MID reading.

I used phillips 66 regular 86 octane gas for this tank. I'm still at 4000 miles so i'm on oem break-in oil. My tires are michelin primacy with 43 psi cold in them. They show 51 psi max. I did have the dealer bring them up to 47 with nitrogen they used in my tires when new.

Sorry I goofed on getting the mid showing the 'mpg and the cruising range' in the same window, which timed out on me at the station. I included the mpg and cruising range readings in separate pictures below.

This picture is the instrument panel picture showing the Trip Miles reading at 848.2 Note the mpg and fuel gauge readings.

Here is my past record screen showing a yellow bar 61 mpg. This tank took about 4 weeks to get to Empty.

This is the trip information screen just before the fillup. Notice the 10 minutes driving in EV broken by 2 shorter bars of recharge. This screen would have been after we left Tularosa, NM and drove south to Alamo to fill up in the downtown area. Note the Cruising Range still shows 14 miles to go.

Another trip info screen after I filled up. I didn't notice the new 812 cruising range till a few miles after I left the station. My wife took this one as we were about to leave town for home. My wife never could hold a camera level.

This is the MID, ECO Drive Level showing 69.3 mpg from the small downtown area of Tularosa to downtown Alamo (16 miles) where we filled up at the phillips 66 station. The fuel gauge was a needle mark above Empty we we left Tulie. I remembered the tank has 2 gallons in reserve below the E mark to cool the fuel pump.

Nice tank Jimmy but you should have driven around the block a few times to get 850 miles on a tank

I wanted to go the other 14 miles although I rather drive in a straight run like on the highway. We made that final drive to Tularosa, NM one of the oldest Cowboy towns in America other then Abilene, Texas. Tulie is still a small town which is interesting to drive though. We drove out north of town about 5 miles in the country just looking around at the farms and such. They grow lots of grapes around that area. Their are some large orchards of pistachio trees (nuts) that are grown between Alamo and Tulie.

I had 14 miles cruising range left, if I had timed my last drive out far enough I could have reached 862 by the time the fuel gauge needle hit the Empty mark.

I won't be driving that slow anymore. I leaned heavily on the EV by driving slow to enhance the EV mode. I will be trying 40 mph on the tank i'm on now with the exception of some downtown driving where I have to slow to 35. I messed up the other night and ran the traction battery down so the engine started about the time I turned into the walmart parking lot. Here I am trying for high gas mileage and the readout was showing 5 mpg till I parked. I usually speed up by 2 mph a mile before I get to walmart to insure the battery is charge enough to be in EV on their large parking lot.

That's a mpg killer by driving slow in a parking lot or sitting at a red light and the 'engine is running' to charge the traction battery. This is two areas where the EV helps the gas mileage big time.

Thanks for the compliment for my hard work on my 848 mile tank. I never in my wildest drams would think a Camry hybrid could ever do that.

Congratulations! That is an amazing accomplishment.

I have a questoin on the tires. I have a new 2013 TCH with Bridgestondes tires (harsh ride) and I am considering replacing them with Michelin's Primacy MXV4.

How are your Primacy tires wearing? I read some posts in which people with Primacy on their TCH are only getting 30k out of the 60k on those tires.

I want to change to the Primacy but *not* if I am only going to get around 30-40k out of them.

We are getting about 37000 mikes with these primacy tires. We are on our third set. They keep our mileage at a higher level and they have a smooth ride. For me the smooth ride is worth the small difference in mileage. The cement truck ride gets old quickly. We bought the tires from a local dealer discount tire and they will credit back money if the tires didn't last.

I am rotating the tires with every oil change as a side note.

The guys that report low miles on their Primacy MXV4 tires forget to mention their driving style or cold tire pressures. Open the page below and click the Reviews Tab. Next click where it says, Read all reviews for this tire. You will see a Filter you can set for 50 to 70K or 70K or higher. I set it for Toyota Camry and found most are getting 40K+. One was a Avalon at 46K.

Their is but one Primacy MXV4. Their are other MXV4's like the older plus and S8 tire. Some get the MXV4 mixed up with the MXM4.

Consumer Reports show the Primacy as very good on tire wear. That would depend on your tire pressure and your driving habits. The city or highway driving would hurt or help the tire miles.

You may already know the 93V is the smaller 9/32" tread depth. I bought those so to have high mpg right off the start. The 94H series has the deeper 11/32" tread.

My 93V tire started at 9/32 and are now at 8/32 after 16 months of driving. Remember I drive usually at 40 mph to achieve high mpg.

You want a good high mileage tire you might consider the Michelin Defender. Tire racks reviews on the defender don't show many reports of high miles. I thought the tire had been out for three or so years.

I have had nothing but great results and ride with the Michelin brand. You can get a good ride out of your Michelin's at 40 psi cold tire pressures.

Their may be a few Defender tire owners here in the group.

Are you getting some kind of discount replacing at 37k when it should last to 60k?

At $800.00 a pop to change tires can add up quickly and kill any savings you may get with a Hybrid.

Your close on the pricing. I came up with $812 installed with lifetime balancing and their road hazard guarantee. Rotate and flat fixing is free at Discount Tire.

Michelin has a $70 visa prepaid card deal going on till Aug 29th if you buy a full set of tires. The card sent later would bring the price down to $742.

Talking about low miles. That could be due to the thinner 9.5/32 tread on the V series tire which comes oem on the Camry hybrids in Canada and many here on the east coast. The 93V has a UTQG of 500 where the 94H with the deeper 11/32 tread shows UTQG at 650 which would sure last longer.

I ask a discount assistant manager about tire credit if the tire won't last the 60K limited warranty. He said some tires they give a $100 to $200 tire credit.

I figure my 94V tires should last 5 years. I usually buy new tires at 40K just to get the new tire ride back.

You may have overlooked that these are one of the top rated LRR tires. The low rolling resistance alone can save you $250 to $300 @ $3.75 per gallon on your gas bill over 5 years or driving.
