I am not aware of any updated TSB. But, I'm sure it will be out since the most recent announcement from Toyota.

I do not speak for Toyota. But, IMHO I believe they recommended the 5W-20 AND the 0W-20 because the 0W-20 was not readily availble - until recently.

I would definitely make sure they are at least using the 5W-20.
A lot of dealerships still have 5W-30 in their BULK tanks - because it is cheaper!

 

Change the oil myself using 0W-20 Mobil 1 and Toyota filter.

 

Another option is ENEOS Fully-Synthetic 0W-20.
The ENEOS brand is manufactured by Nippon Oil who supplies the factory fill 0W-20 to Toyota.

I'm going to the dealer next week and want to ask what they put in, I asked them to put the 0 in and they said ok we'll put the hybrid oil in there. I forgot to clarify when I picked it up.

 

My first oil change.... went back to dealer and asked the service manager what they use. (I just wanted to see what he would say). Was told 5w-30. I said "it's a hybrid"! He had someone check .... it was like they were suprised that it would be some other oil. I asked them to fill with 0w-20 and that's what was written up. Based on all I've been reading here, I'm not sure I trust any of them to know what's supposed to go in this car. How do I know what they really put in? From now on, I'm going to buy my own oil and either change it myself....or....go to my old oil change place and bring my own oil!

 

I buy my mobil 0W-20 oil at walmart. I buy my filter from the toyota dealer that fits the TCH. I drive home and let the car cool down for hours. Then I go out and change the oil myself.

During the coldest part of winter, I will buy the oil and filter and put it in a plastic big in the front passenger floorboard. I leave a note on the passenger seat stating this engine takes 4 1/4 quarts with filter. That was when I had the oil changed at the walmart automotive when it was really cold outside. At least you can shop while they get to your car.

I always check my oil level the next day after the engine is cooled completely.

I also use the walmart lifetime tire balance and rotation as it's convenient for me. They seem a little lower priced than some of the independent tires stores here in town.

 

I just don't trust anyone to change my oil but myself. You will always take better care of your care than someone else, it doesn't belong to them. They have the "hurry up and get it done right or wrong syndrome."

The experts usually are not "the experts!"

Peace of mind means alot, can't question the results if you do it yourself!

 

Let us know how it goes, if they have 0W-20 in stock, how much, etc.

 

OK, all this discussion actually has me thinking about changing my own oil, although it's been a LONG time since I tried that sort of thing. Didn't mind doing it on my $400 beaters, but when I got to a point where I could buy a new car, didn't have the time (or the inclination) to do it myself. A few quick questions:

- Is a special tool required to remove the oil filter? Last time I changed oil, I used the "jam a screwdriver through it and twist" universal tool.

- Is it better for drainage for the car to be flat or maybe up on small ramps?

- Where do you all dispose of your used oil?

 

Yes. Before, I would buy the quarts of 0W-20 on-line & then bring it to the dealership & they would change the oil + change filter for $14-15.

Now, there is a local Toyota dealership who charges $44 for a complete 0W-20 oil change. And they take care of the used oil.

A little more $ than doing it myself. But, very convenient!
