I keep track of all gallons at fillups and the mileage on my home computer. Over the life so far, I have a high of 50.12 mpg and a low of 27.55 mpg with an overall average of 35.78 mpg. The TCH has 15747.4 miles on it now.

 

i did not intend for this thread to expand into several pages, but maybe it's good it did.

point to this thread might be very simple. if a HIGHWAY MILEAGE is a breaking point for you when considering this car, IT IS NOT THE BEST CHOICE. eg, when i bought my 04 CR-V, i put 54 000 miles on her year one, mostly hwy. for folks like this, that spend a lot of mileage on freeway, maybe a TDI or a quality 4 cyl with manual is a better choice.

i am even going to be blasphemous, and say that best hwy vehicle i ever drove was Buick LeSabre, as i got 742 miles on a tank before light came up, and it was absolutely superiorly comfortable and safe. found later it had that new 3.1L V6 in it that was the first one to break 30mpg for a V6 engine.

 

The faster a car is driven the worse the mileage.

apparently, a lot of poor freeway performance was heavy passenger and mountain passes on my trip.
when i drive around here, even at 70mph by speedo, on cruise, she stays solid above 40mpg on freeway. as of today, 40.5 tank average.

 

My wife and I did a trip from San Antonio to Branson last year. In Texas, we averaged about 32-33 MPG, mostly freeway. Once out of Texas and I could find NON-ETHANOL gas in Oklahoma, mileage went up to around 35. After a week in Branson (LOTS of slow, poorly timed red lights) and through the hills of northern Arkansas, still stayed at 34-35 MPG. Once back in Texas using ethanol, mileage went back down to 32-33.

Bottom line: hybrids will save your lunch at redlights and in hilly terrain, with the electric motor assist. They do about what any mid-size 4-cylinder will do in constant freeway driving, and they, like all cars, loose mileage when run on ethanol-gas.
