My dealer said that I have a free oil change at 1000 miles. I've never heard anything like this. I thought everybody here is getting their oil changed at 5000 miles. Is there some kind of break-in oil that needs changing after 1000 miles?

 

My dealer (Darcars Frederick) offered the same- 1000 mile oil change. I've always done one at 1000 miles on a new car to make sure any leftovers from the engine build are out.

The only car I ever changed the oil on at 1000 miles spun a rod bearing.

I did my first oil change at 4500 miles, and plan to do all oil changes between 4500 and 5000 miles untill I reach 36,000 miles. Then I plan to go to 7500 or 10,000 miles dependent on oil analysis results.

 

We did a 1000 mile oil change on our TCH, and it was free at the dealer (though I think we could have waited until 5000 and had that one free instead).

My dad has always done the 1000 mile change for new cars for the reason Mike notes above, and I have kept up the practice. Ag4ever's experience notwithstanding, I don't think it hurts (and it may help) to do an extra oil change.

 

I am 100% sure the oil change interval had nothing to do with the rod bearing failure.

It was on a 2001 Mustang Cobra, and it spun the bearing at 9,000 miles. They fixed it, and it spun again less than 1,000 miles latter. I am 100% sure it was caused by a manufacturing defect, and then did it again due to Ford's cheap warranty repair policy at the time. I am sure the rod end was too big, and when they fixed it, they just threw in a new bearing hopeing it would last for another 26,000 miles to get us out of warranty.

In the end it turned into a lawsuit, and now we won't EVER buy from Ford even though we did win the lawsuit. All this on a $35,000 dream car of my wife's.

It did run good when it ran right though.

 

I agree that the 1000 mile oil change is a good thing to remove tiny metal slivers that shear off under normal early break-in period usage.

Yeah same here, I heard that for the first 1000 miles you should not go over 3000 rpm and change your oil after that to get rid of all the tiny metal shavings. It's only 1 oil change so I figure why not.

 

I remember 20 to 30 years ago seeing tiny metal shavings during an oil change, but I can't help but think that in the past couple of decades engine part tolerances have become so fine that if I had metal shavings in my oil I'd have a lot more to worry about then if I changed my oil last month or am going to wait until next month.

 

Run a magnet through the oil. Although I don't think those peices will damage the engine, it's only one stickin oil change. Can't hurt.

 

Over 3000 RPM, we have no tach, lol! I'm sure I've been past 5000 RPMs on 'several' occasions.
