why would someone want to buy something that yells at them when they are speeding? i see why the government would want people to have it, but i don't understand why the person speeding would. maybe it's companies that do a lot of driving buying these?

I think the obvious application is to prevent speeding from happening in the first place. This would quickly become a hot topic if a government tried to do it.

I'm trying to think of an application that would generate a minimal amount of controversey. Just put it on cars of convicted speeders, etc.....they would have to have a record of good no moving violations to get the black box removed. They would have to pay to have the gizmo installed, and there would be a fail-safe mechanism that notifies authorities if attempts are made to cheat it.

It would be great for commercial and government vehicles. In other words, vehicles where a company buys them and it's employees operate them. Generally large entities don't want their cars to be beat on by the drivers, so this would be a nice way to both ensure that the drivers are following traffic laws as well as not wasting fuel. Every company and government agency hates to see a huge fuel bill for their fleet, so this could help with that.

When I saw "speed limiter tested," I had something else in mind!

I don't think it was a speed limiter, per say, but once I had to drive a school bus. When I got that thing on the highway, as soon as I exceeded 55 MPH a buzzer sounded and a red lamp illuminated on the dash saying, "overspeed." I'm not sure if it was designed as a speed limiter or an RPM limiter, as the engine speed sounded like it was maxed out.

That was an old bus. I had to learn to double-clutch as I was driving it!
