The Hummer is popular among kids and probably many adults to for the same reason "Grave Digger" and other monster trucks, NASCAR vehicles, etc. are popular -- power and control (whether real or implied) and excess (size or speed).

Put toy cars out in front of a kiddo. A Hummer, a small 4-door sedan, a "Grave Digger" Monster Truck, a bright yellow Tonka dump truck, etc. I doubt any of us think the 4-door sedan will be touched for play, other than as something to ram the other vehicles into.

A kiddo might play with the h2 (Hydrogen fuel cell car) but again, it'd probably become an obstacle for Grave Digger or land in the dump truck bed of the Tonka.

LOL!! You really know a kid's behavior well!

I had almost forgotten, but when I was a kid, we loved crushing lesser vehicles with my huge red Tonka truck.

as i woman i resent the hummer assumption that i need a tank in order to get my girl on. where did this market idea come from? perhaps the gentleman from GM above can shed some light on why anything would be presented in this manner. quite frankly, this girl would rather save some resources for her grandkids, and some money to pay the mortgage by being a little more sensitive to what's going on out there..........

did anyone see the article on just how much profit EXXON made last quarter?

A Car and Driver writer had a good statement about this when they tested the H3 last year. "For me, playing GI Joe in a pseudo Jeep is just uncomfortable while real soldiers are dying in the real thing." Several other testers at C/D backed this sentiment. Given that C/D writers are hardly environmentalists, this seems to be proof that mentality towards these types of vehicles really are changing... and this was when gas prices were lower.

I second that too. I find it down-right insulting at suggestions from such commercials that "these vehicles" actually fill a need for civilian/urban use. What the heck are the GM advertising execs smoking?

The bigger question is what is the public who are buying these smoking? I would assume research went into the making of these ads, and they recognize that people often buy Hummers because of their personal insecurities.... and these ads play right into this.... very blatently. Despite my dislike of Hummers, past Hummer ads have been very well made, so I would expect that the ad agency knows what they are doing.

Martin, the Bradsher report may have been extreme and exagerated, but why would these ads exist if there wasn't a dose of truth in there? I assume your ad execs know what works and have researched their demographics. Have you seen these ads yet?

This is just a symptom of a greater issue with the American public.

Assuming an add agency or ad execs knows what they are doing would be a very very bad assumption and expectation in my book.

I can't count the number of people who supposedly know what they are doing, that really have no clue and are just full of BS. The only reason they have gotten the jobs they have, is not because of job performance or knowledge, but simple because they can BS with the best of them.

Very true!!

However, many of us regard the marketing and advertizing as cititically important tools that CAN help shape public opinion, what we wear, how we think about ourselves, heck... even how we speak !!!

Yes, we've been raised by TV and mass advertising more effectively than our parents have probably intented and that may help explain the "greather issue with the Americ public". BUT I still think the people at the control of the marketing machines (GM & others advertising execs) should never lose sight of the significance and impact that their adds and ideas carry. At times it appears they lack any sense or moral guidance to make the right choices. In my view, not airing these adds would be the right choice.

Cheers;

MSantos
