Default The mother of all bad choices....

We have all made some questionable choices and had our share of bad luck but this guy has got to take the cake for all time:

From http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/03/04/tillman/index.html

Army opening criminal probe into Tillman's death

Ok first the guy turns down a $3.6 million dollar contract to serve our country. Some might call that honorable. Then the guy gets shot and killed in Afghanistan. They originally said that the Taliban did it so at least the guy was a hero.

Now it looks like his own troops shot the poor guy! Can you believe it!

Yeah that came out like 2 weeks after he was shot. It wasn't official at the time but everyone knew from the wording of the information released that's what happened. A pretty sizable percentage of war casualties are from friendly fire. I fully respect the guy for signing up for the Army at a time when everyone knew that if you did so, you would be deployed to a region where our soldiers were getting killed every day. He knew this and chose to sign up anyway. Everyone makes choices and we live and die by them. Heck, we all die anyway.

Bad choice? Questionable choice? Sure, we all make bad and/or questionable choices, but it seems to me that only Pat Tillman has the right to regret or question his choice to join the Army, and I have never heard that he ever regretted or questioned his choice. So I don't see it as a bad or questionable choice. I see it as a heroic choice that few of us would ever have the guts to make, no matter how he died.

Pat Tillman was selfless individual through his life, echewing publicity - he was the anti-Terrell Owens. Who killed him does not dimish his character.

if it's 20-20 hindsight, it's useless.
everyone makes choices every day. some work out well, some work out badly, some are downright terrible. he was the victim of a lousy chain of events, and the worst one was not his choice of life direction.

just heard about four seniors from a local high school who died last night. estimated at over 100 mph on I-440 on the east side of Raleigh, NC. several other high school students from the same school have died in similar accidents over the past few years.

bad choice of schools?
no.

Bad choice of schools? Without further info I'd say no.

Bad choice to drive 100 mph when you don't have much time behind the wheel? Sorry but I'd say doing a hundred was a bad choice, at least on the driver's part.

Pat gave up a promising career to serve his country. I doubt that many others gave up so much money to do so. But the money pales in comparison to the loss of life. Is Pat's death any more tragic than the other sons and daughters that have been killed by friendly fire? I think not. So it disturbs me that the media is focused on Pat Tillman, without mentioning the others who have died. I would like to hear the whole story from the media. What are we doing for the others who have died? How many other firendly fire incidents have been covered up? If anyone has seen any media coverage on these questions, please point me in the right direction.

Default Yes, It Happens More Than We Wish to Believe....

Friendly fire has and will continue to happen. This is another of a better known instance - four Canadians killed by an American F16 in Afghanstan. Pilots in the military apparently are allowed to use speed for their long sorties.

This old news. The reason the law suit exist in this case is because of the cover up. But it was clear that he was shot by his own trips a long time ago.

Unlike krousdb, I think that it's not a disturbing thing that there's been some disproportionate media attention on what happened to Pat Tillman. Certainly his death isn't more tragic than the deaths of other young men and women in this war, but it is at least representative of some of them. I think a lot of those poor people aren't getting much media attention, sympathy, support for their families, etc., and if telling the story of Pat Tillman reminds people that these sacrifices are being made, that's something of a good thing. Maybe my political bias is showing, but it seems to me that there are a lot of people who go around saying we're doing so well in this war and who would rather that we didn't mention the people like Pat Tillman who are paying so dearly for it. And I'm not unpatriotic, and I do support the troops- I support them so much that I wish they were all back home, safe, instead of dead, wounded, or in danger. This death, like so many others, is a tragedy, whether he was killed accidentally or by the enemy, and there are more like it every day. We shouldn't forget about them.
