Default How good/bad is a 1998 Chevy S-10 MT 4CYL

Does anyone out there have any experience with a Chevy S-10 or the GM equivalent?
My neighbor has a dinged up 1998-68000 miles-5 speed manual trans-4 cyl.He wants $1800 for it(it was in an accident-still functional, but dinged up).
I need a Home Depot vehicle and an extra "stuff carrier during evacuation" vehicle. I suspect I can make it reliable enough to not break down during an evac.
Any ideas-anyone have any experience with them? Thanks.Charlie
PS CR says they are near junk-lots of reliability problems.

My son has a 96 s10- 4 cyl / mt. It has some 75k miles on it. It seems to be bullet proof. Gets great mpg too.

I have an 02 s10 4cyl with auto with over 30k and never a problem.

Personally. I wouldnt hesitate if I knew the truck, but one never knows how any truck may have been kept in the past. There is always risk.

Good luck.
