My point was that if you are going to "walk the walk" then you should "talk the talk." Senator Obama should know there are multiple hybrid options if he insists on driving an SUV, which is his perfect right as a US citizen.

If that had been any other congressperson in the story, I still would have posted it. It was just silly to make that speech and then that statement at the end.

PS. And this IS the part of GH in which "Politics" is an approved subject. We are all mature enough to have reasonable discussions without personal attacks on each other, are we not?
Well, let's run the experiment and see:

According to the reports "After every meeting GW, Cheny and Hassert left in a non-hybrid or hydrogen vehicle . . .

This is in part why the USA is having a hard time getting gas mileage up in the fleet and selling cleaner cars. Leaders who do not "lead by example" themselves.

Why yes, we can! All we have to do is take these "non-political words" and change the subject and we'll all be happy as clams!

Understand that some of us are happy enough to leave our politics at the door to GreenHybrid.com but we're not afraid, even looking forward, to throwing these "non political words" back in the face of those who start it.

The last time I check, a President has a lot more power to effect public policy than a Senator or private citizen. But the sauce for the goose works great on the gander.

Has Bush or Cheney given a speech urging people to drive hybrids and then on their way out said to a reporter, "I prefer SUVs myself." ????

Is there a bullet-proof Hybrid SUV or Hydrogen Limo available for sale?

Let's tread carefully here folks. Don't want to have to lock this one up.

So as long as they don't talk about it, everything is OK?

All bullet-proof vehicles are custom jobs. But you won't find a hybrid at GW's ranch and a Ford Escort or any of the hybrid SUVs would be perfect there.

My first post was to point out how SILLY it is to make a speech about encouraging people to drive hybrid cars and then tell a reporter "I prefer SUVs" on the way out.

That was the point. I think this thread needs to be closed because some people cannot take my post for what it was worth but instead must get overly defensive.

I was active at a forum that was (and still is) absurdly strict about political discussion. Threads were liable to be locked left and right merely by mentioning a current events story that was hybrid-related, then the name of a politican that might be the sponsor of a hybrid-friendly bill.

There is a happy medium between censoring any hint of political discussion

....or

....getting partisan at any opportunity.

Just a general remark - I have not read the details of this thread

When I see the same pattern used on a Democrat while ignoring the failures of the current Republican leadership . . . well expect to have your words tossed back . . . with pictures.

Look, we have a serious energy problem in this country and the current adminstration and Congress are asleep at the switch. But then to toss arrows at anyone who advocates energy efficiency . . . expect those same words to come back. People who live in glass houses . . .

I did not see anything about your original post that was a "blatant political attack". It takes a lot of imagination to make it such. I also do not understand how one person being hypersensitive to your post warrants a thread being closed or threatened to be closed.

I would like to clarify that this is in the Anything Goes section. If you look on the main discussion board, you will see that this section is for "Politics, life, gadgets, people... gobbledygook."

The pattern is quite familar:

http://john-kerry.tonyspencer.com/jo...onment-suv.htm

"
John Kerry on the Environment - Drives an SUV - Lies About It

Kerry's SUV habit fuels a 'trust' gap
By Boston Herald (April 24, 2004)
Now we've truly heard it all. Rising gas prices are the latest John Kerry [related, bio] campaign theme, so naturally the senator was asked this week about his personal vehicle usage. . . ."

This is the same pattern recently used to whack at Al Gore for his movie, An Inconvient Truth. It is the hypocracy of holding just the Democrats to a higher standard that the Republican adminstration actively denigrades.

Look, we can agree to work together on our country's energy problems and this is a great place to share tips and techniques. But there is a problem of 'motes and beams' in the eyes of some of our members. I fully understand that our Republican leaning members are blind to the beam that blocks their point of view (I have blood kin with the same problem.) But that just makes it so much easier to answer with a facts and data based 'clue by four.'

We DO have a serious problem. And to have someone with the growing political clout of Senator Obama doing something so silly is a shame. This is not a "democrat versus republican" thing and never was intended to be.

Like I said earlier: I would have posted the idiocy of the story regardless of who the politician was. It just happened to be the one it was.
