Default Smartkey question

I have recently just purchased a 2008 NAH with tech package. Great car, and the nav package is great. I like the gps better than the Garmin I have in the other car.

The salesman told me to be careful with the smartkey since it's replacement cost is around $240. He mentioned that I should not keep the key near my cellphone (ie in my pocket together). Has anyone heard of this being a problem? I really would like to not have to think about where my cell and keys are all the time.

Thanks for everyone's time....

That problem with the smartkey or I key and cell phones was well known and Nissan is already replacing those keys for 2007. the problem only affected the early 2007 and was corrected by the 2008. The problem was that the cellphone would erase the I-key rendering it useless if you kept both in the same pocket. I think your salesman was just trying to be cautions. Even though the problem was corrected...it is better to be safe than sorry.

All of the original 2007 Nissan Key fobs could be erased accidently if they came within 1 inch of certain cell phones and those cell phones were turned on. Nissan has already started replacing these fobs and I would be very surprised if 08's had this problem. Most likely a salesperson erring on the side of caution.

Here is the link to where I first talked about this when we received our warning letter from Nissan.

I had Marlboro Nissan do the key fob and air deflector recall today.

I had to do a "wait" for the service and it took just under an hour and a half and I was back on the road.

The fobs are $20 on eBay and the dealership can program them. I bought a used Altima that only had a fob, no keys, just a fob. I bought 3 keys and 2 fobs on eBay for about $70 total and they all work fine. The dealer was able to cut the keys based on the vin and program all the fobs.

I did the same, bought extra fob keys from ebay (already had the metal key cut on them for a different car) and took them to the dealer to have them programmed...i think it cost around $60 to get it done.

I have a remote start in my car which eats up 1 fob key, purchased 2 more on ebay and had to have all 4 of my keys reprogrammed since they all get new codes.

2 fob keys with 2 metal keys for my car
1 fob key in my remote start box
1 fob key with metal key for someone else's car (good to be used as a valet key since they can't unlock my glove box with this one)
