Default NAH Tire Pressure

Have any of you increased the tire pressure of your NAH over the recommended 35PSI to increase mpg? I went up to 42psi but afraid to go any higher.

Hey Jack, I went to the max 44 psi. As a matter of fact, i have 3 tire psi gauges and they all give me slightly different reading (+/- 1 psi) so during my oil change, i asked my dealer to increase the psi to 44, they had no problem with it. I also spoke with an independent tire shop specialist in newark and he informed me that the only draw back he was aware of is the harsh ride and that the tire failure rate is way above 44 psi. My mpg increased slightly however I immediately noticed the sharper steering and the ability to coast a longer stretch with the increased psi. It also reduced the boat feel that others have mentioned on various posts. My toyota tacoma has huge tires, but the psi max sidewall is 35 psi, i have it at 44 psi also with no ill effects to date. I have heard of some who will increase psi to 50 or 60. Not ready to try that yet. Good luck

If you hit some bigger holes on the road your tires are more likely to blow out at 44 psi as opposed to at 32. If you go into a skid you are more likely to shred a tire with bigger psi... Though contrary to comon belief, eventhough the overinflated tires make less contact with the ground when cornering or braking the higher psi tires will perform slightly better due to their stifness (assuming they don't shred).

I've only had my car for 3 months and the low tire pressure warning just came on. Is this common or do I have a slow leak?

it might just not have been inflated properly when you took shipment of the car, just fill it to normal pressure and keep track of it for a month

Speaking of the tire pressure sensor, how does one reset the warning once the tires are inflated to their proper pressure? Mine went off and I pumped up the tires to 37psi, but the warning light won't go off. I don't want to go to the dealership everytime I need a tire pressure warning reset... :-(

Thanks!!

Chess - the light doesn't go off until after you've driven 20 mph (after inflating). I ended up going to 42 psi and the light didn't turn off until I hit the highway. If yours isn't turning off it sounds like a service issue.

I drove a few freeway trips before I hit the dealer... The dealership reset it. They (again) told me that its for my own protection to have the dealership check it out and thats why only they can reset the warning, which sounds really bogus and annoying, but what can I do? This has happened twice now.

Is there some place in the manual that says that the tire pressure sensor goes off when certain conditions are met? If the dealership is lying to me I would make sure I get their heads on a platter...

I reset my tire warning all the time. All you need to do is make sure all the tires are above the lower limit (35 I think) by filling/checking each tire. (only doing one tire may not work) Then you need to drive over 16 MPH for a few minutes without stopping and the light will reset. It is on page 2-13 of the 08 manual. (In my experience, driving over 25 MPH for a minute or two always works.)
