I think the term "breaking in" is some what different between old and modern cars.
Manufacturers say no need to break in, but also they say not to exceed some mph until some miles driven.

I agree that posters are saying NiMH requires some charge/discharge cycles to get good performance. The NiMH battery can't work full capability after long slept situation.
Also, I believe tires, as well as engine and gears, can't show the best fuel economy if they are brand new.
I think after 5000 miles is good point to see their real performance.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but I really have seen no change in my mileage as I passed 5,000 miles to now over 9,000 in my TCH. If you look at the TCH mileage database, I don't think my results are unusual.

Page 15-5 in the NAH Owner's Manual:

BREAK-IN SCHEDULE

During the first 1,200 miles (2,000 km),
follow these recommendations to obtain
maximum engine performance and ensure
the future reliability and economy of
your new vehicle. Failure to follow these
recommendations may result in shortened
engine life and reduced engine
performance.

- Do not accelerate at full throttle in any gear.

- Avoid quick starts.
- Avoid hard braking as much as possible.

- Do not tow a trailer for the first 500 miles

As spartybrutus alluded to, their is a driver's break-in period.

For me - the vehicle break-in was nothing - but the driver's breaking was months.

This account for the bad hybrid reviews.

Could someone do me a favor and tell me what the owners manual says about towing a trailer?

Thanks!

Thanks very much for looking up the towing specs for me!

I actually did a little digging and found that Nissan publishes .pdf copies of their owners manuals on their web site.

Nice! Not all automakers do this.
