You are nibbling around the ultimate question of the energy used per distance traveled. There is similar metric called the energy cost, in dollars per mile. Ultimately, folks look at the cost of ownership per mile.

Now if I could just get a portable, coal gasification system working, my mileage would be measured in tons of anthracite per mile.

I may be "nibbling" (huh?) but it matters. Saving $15.00 a month on reduced gasoline costs means little if the new owner spends $20.00 more on electricity.

How many watt-hours per mile did the Test Prius use?

Not a problem in North Alabama where we only pay $0.075 per kWhr with 90% efficiency versus gasoline costing $2.90/gal with a 33% efficiency loss. Heck, if I had a plug-in, I'd cut my cost per mile by more than half.

Too bad the standard Insight lacks an EV mode. However, one Insight owner added a 5th, electrically driven wheel.
