Default Line between gas-electric hybrid and small internal-combustion car starting to blur

According to Ford, the 2011 Ford Fiesta equipped with the 6-speed automatic transmission will be rated at 40mles per gallon on the highway. Though it's not yet official, the Chevrolet Cruze Eco is also expected to join the 40 mpg when later this year.

Ford’s advertising tag line for the Fiesta brags: "The Fiesta gets 40 highway miles per gallon. That's more than 21 hybrids." Ford’s spinmeisters are correct that most hybrids, including expensive models from BMW, Lexus and Mercedes, as well as the mid-market Toyota Camry Hybrid, don’t reach 40 mpg on the highway. What Ford omits is that all five of Ford’s own hybrids don’t hit the 40-mpg mark on the highway.

As long as there are waaaaaaay too many redlights in virutually every city in the nation, and those lights are very poorly coordinated, if at all, hybrids will ultimately win out.

Why? A hybrid is using little to no gas while sitting and wasting time at those lights, while every one of those small cars use gas the entire time they are sitting and idling.

And of course, once you take in the lack of crash safety in those small cars, the arguement is over.....
