San Francisco, Boston, Austin, Los Angeles and the Raleigh-Durham region are among the US metropolitan areas most often cited to be the most electric-vehicle ready in terms of charging infrastructure. Now, Kansas City wants to be added to that list.
The Kansas City metropolitan area, whose 14 counties straddle the Kansas-Missouri border and have about 2.7 million people, has both enough EV charging stations in operations and in the pipeline to meet any type of forecasted growth for electric-drive vehicles, says Electrify Heartland, an advocate for vehicle electrification in the Kansas City area.
The region has 78 publicly accessible EV charging stations, with additional stations opening up about every week. Additionally, Smith Electric Vehicles, Dow Kokam and EVSE distributor LilyPad EV are all based in the Kansas City area. Therefore, Kansas City is "ready to lead the nation in the development of electric vehicles and related technologies, as well as strategies to support these vehicles as they become more common on the roads," said Kelly Gilbert, transportation director, Metropolitan Energy Center, in a statement. Who knew?
