Red face Exxon: Energy Independance Impossible

Exxon states it's impossible for the U.S. to become energy independent in the short or medium term. Adds it's a bad idea. I'll only agree it would take awhile and dismiss the rest of what Exxon says. I see every reason for trying to anyway....

quote: "The world’s largest publicly traded oil company, however, says hoping to end foreign oil imports is not only a bad idea, but also impossible."

I can see why they might say it was "impossible", but I don't understand why they would say that ending foreign oil imports was a bad idea.

Disappointing, but not surprising.

Yeah... Taking advise on energy independence from Exxon is about as smart as taking addiction counseling from a heroin dealer or taking household budget planning strategy from a member of Congress.

It is not Exxon's decision to make. The buyers make this decision, not the sellers.

Well... You're partially correct. The fuel companies have to start *selling* alternative energy products before anyone can buy them. That involves some degree of *risk*, which is regrettably in short supply in the upper echelons of Corporate America.

I think there are two parts to this issue :-

1. Foreign Oil vs US Oil
2. Energy sources other than Oil

Part 1 : I tend to agree that America will never wean itself off foreign oil - as long as it is so dependent on oil as a fuel source - since there isn't enough supply of American oil to fill current demand.
"Reducing our dependence on foreign oil" is just a political ploy to get the vote for drilling in ANWR passed and more pristine wild places dug up for nothing.

Part 2 : The search for alternative energy sources should rid us of our need for oil period - whatever the source - whether it's local or foreign should become irrelevant.

I can agree with that. Wrecking ANWR wouldn't have helped anyone in the U.S.

1. The oil reserve in Alaska just isn't that big.
2. The BOBs would have just sold the oil to Japan anyway.
